Apply Now for the 2026 4-H Chick Chain Program!

Learn, Grow, and Hatch New Opportunities with 4-H

Are you ready to take on a fun and educational project this spring? Applications are now open for the 4-H Chick Chain Program, where youth get hands-on experience raising their very own backyard flock of laying hens! This program teaches responsibility, animal care, and entrepreneurship — and it’s a perfect introduction to poultry for both beginners and experienced 4-H members.

What Is the 4-H Chick Chain?

The 4-H Chick Chain gives youth the opportunity to raise baby chicks from March through September, learning how to care for and manage a flock of laying hens. Participants will receive 14 baby chicks (from one of four breeds) to raise at home. Throughout the project, 4-H members will attend monthly educational meetings—mostly on Zoom—to learn about topics like chick care, nutrition, coop design, egg production, and even small business basics.

How Does It Work?

Participants pay a small down payment, which will be refunded in full at the end of the program if they successfully raise their chickens and bring three birds to the September Chick Chain Show and Auction. That means if you complete the project, you’ll essentially get 11 chickens for free—an incredible deal for anyone interested in starting or expanding their backyard flock!

September Show & Auction

In September, participants will bring three of their 14 hens to the Chick Chain Show and Auction. This event is a fun celebration of everyone’s hard work, complete with judging, awards, and the opportunity to sell birds to keep this program going each year (covering those chick costs). It’s a great way to connect with other 4-H members, show off your skills, and see what others have accomplished.

Choose Your Breed

Participants can choose from four different chicken breeds. While the chicks are expected to be pullets (young hens), it’s sometimes hard to tell when they’re just a day old—so there’s always the chance you might end up with a rooster! This year’s breed choices include; Rhode Island Blue, Silver laced Wyandotte, Speckled Sussex, and Buff Orpington.
