The home school 4-H club met on September 18th at 1:00 PM at the UT/TSU Extension Overton Office. Approximately 24 homeschoolers were in attendance. Youth participated in community building Jenga, an overview of 4-H opportunities, a sliding scale of public speaking, and then were divided into beginner public speakers and intermediate public speaker groups.
Alyssa led the beginners in understanding the hamburger method of speech writing. Nicole led the intermediate in a speech contest overview and stepping out of their comfort zones. All youth were invited to compete for home school awards and for a spot at the county contest. The home school contest will be on November 20th. Competing youth will move into the conference room for the first part of the meeting.
If youth attended this meeting and love to talk or are interested in communication, the state website has project books and ideas for outlets for 4-H members to work on their skills. We encourage those who are interested to fill out the beginner project book and return it to us for a reward: https://4h.tennessee.edu/public-speaking/
November details are still being finalized, but we believe the focus will be on agriculture.
- Check-in will be at 12:30, and the meeting will start at 1:00 PM.
- If you have a child who might want to lead the recreational activity, please e-mail us asap! The recreational activity must include everyone and last no longer than 8 minutes. It must be something that all youth in 4th-12th grade could participate in.
A few parents asked questions about volunteering to lead a project group or to help with meetings. Anyone who volunteers with 4-H must become a level 3 certified volunteer. Volunteerism information can be found here: https://4h.tennessee.edu/volunteers/
Any questions, comments, or concerns should be directed towards Mrs. Nicole and Mrs. Alyssa.
